Checking In on Radiohead's Experiment
Initial reports claimed that Radiohead sold 1.2 million copies of In Rainbows within the first ten days, but Mike Nizza, writing for the NYTimes, reports a slightly different story:
Based on the internet activity of 2 million people in its database, ComScore said that about 1.2 million people visited Radiohead’s Web site during the entire month of October — not just the first 10 days — and “a significant percentage of visitors ultimately” downloaded it*.
Nizza also runs down the percentages of who paid, who didn’t and what the average amount paid was.
I feel a little better knowing I paid above the average of $6, and I would have paid more if they’d offered the tracks as 256kbps instead of 160kbps.
